About Osteopathy

Osteopathy is a form of manual therapy which is used in order to prevent, diagnose, and treat a wide range of conditions. The osteopathic approach therefore entails that of a holistic nature, considering the body as a whole unit. This means treating the person as an individual and in some cases the cause is able to be eliminated instead of just the symptoms.

A wide range of techniques are used with a patient centred approach with the aim to restore function and improve wellbeing including but not limited to; mobilisations, muscle energy techniques, and soft tissue techniques.

Osteopathy Consultation Process

Case History

For the first consultation your osteopath will go into detail about your presenting complaint, lifestyle, general health, and systemic health.

Physical Examination

Your osteopath will then undertake various tests such as observing your general posture, palpating sites of pain and various muscle groups, active and passive examinations of various joints involved with your presenting complaint, and any additional tests for specific injuries. Following this, if your osteopath feels your condition requires further help such as GP or specialist, then they will carry out a referral to the required professional.

Treatment

Each treatment session is planned to suit the individual and their presentation. This will entail various different types of techniques used to treat findings such as mobilisation of L2 vertebrae as it is restricted and therefore hindering functionality of the spine, or soft tissue release to the trapezius muscle as it is causing referred pain into the mandible. Every body is different!

Exercises & Advice

Following the consultation, your osteopath will provide you with an exercise toolkit to aid their treatment and improve your condition and presentation from home. They will also offer advice specific to you and your lifestyle to best assist recovery.

About Your Consultation

Clothing

Please either bring with you or wear comfortable clothing such as shorts or leggings and a vest top. This enables your practitioner to be able to examine you properly.

How Long Do Appointments Last?

First consultations will last approximately 90 minutes depending on how complicated the case is. Follow up appointments last approximately 45 minutes.

Will Treatment Be Painful?

Not usually. However, mild discomfort MAY be experienced following treatment especially if your complaint involves a painful or inflamed injury. In most cases, it will pass within 24 hours. If at any stage you feel uncomfortable in your appointment, please inform your practitioner. If you have any concerns outside of appointments please get in touch.

How Many Sessions Will I Need?

The number of treatments required will depend on the condition and the individual. This will be addressed in appointments with your practitioner.
