Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition characterised by widespread musculoskeletal pain, fatigue, cognitive difficulties (also referred to as "fibro-fog"), mood and memory issues. The exact cause is unknown, however it is thought to be associated with abnormal pain processing and nervous system changes. Whilst there is no cure, osteopathy can help to ease pain by identifying areas of tension and utilising soft tissue techniques and gentle joint mobilisations. This can improve blood flow and thus healing mechanics, and lymphatic drainage which can reduce inflammation and improve tissue health.
Osteopathy can also help with stress reduction by utilising techniques which promote down regulation of the sympathetic nervous system which drives the "fight or flight" response, and up-regulate the parasympathetic nervous system which in turn reduces stress and anxiety which are exacerbating factors in chronic pain conditions. Osteopaths can also offer lifestyle advice for stress management, regular exercise, and sleep patterns.
