Headaches have many causes, and one we see most frequently here in clinic is tension from the neck, also known as tension type headaches. There are approximately 30 muscles in the neck, and these have important roles in stabilising the head and cervical spine. They also help to move the head in different directions, and assist with breathing mechanics, swallowing and chewing. With this in mind, there are a number of factors that can contribute to tension in these muscles such as stress, poor posture and sleeping position, caffeine intake, dehydration, illnesses, jaw clenching or teeth grinding, overexertion, or injury to the neck. Another cause of headaches are trigger points which are localised tender areas which can refer pain into the head and involve muscles such as trapezius, sub-occipitals, sternocleidomastoid, and splenius capitis.
In light of this, osteopaths can utilise soft tissue techniques to associated tight muscles and improve blood flow to aid healing mechanics, mobilisation to improve cervical spine mobility, muscle energy techniques to promote relaxation and lengthening of relevant musculature, and trigger point release to alleviate pain referral if present. Following this, your osteopath will provide you with an exercise programme initially focused on stretching relevant muscles based on your presentation, followed by strengthening exercises with the aim to prevent recurrence and strain. Alongside exercises, you will also be provided with advice for what was the likely cause in your case, and for posture and ergonomics to best prevent future episodes.
